CeBIT new plans for its future

A successful CeBIT 2010 has laid the foundation for business growth in the months ahead. "Over the past few days we have seen proof positive of CeBIT's strength and vitality. With an enhanced concept for next year's event, we will be setting the stage for further growth," commented Ernst Raue, the Deutsche Messe Managing Board member in charge of CeBIT, at the closing press conference on 6 March.
The fair still ranks as the world's biggest combined electronics fair, but today it is mainly devoted to business software that for example calculates taxes, manages patient records or keeps factories secure. "The 2011 show will feature an even sharper focus on all the right themes, thus making it even more appealing to new target groups and helping us consolidate our lead over the competition," Raue continued.
The trade show will focus more on consumers in a bid to halt a decline which saw the number of exhibitors drop to 4,157 from 68 countries this year from a peak of 8,093 in 2001.
"We are going on the offensive," said Ernst Raue, a member of the board of Deutsche Messe AG, which put on the five-day display in the northern city of Hanover.
In future it will be restructured into four main areas covering business applications, the public sector, research institutes and private consumers and the internet world. "CeBIT pro" will address professional users, "CeBIT gov" will target government and the public sector, "CeBIT lab" will be home to international research institutions and universities, and "CeBIT life" will cater to prosumers and the techno-savvy consumer.
Consumers are the ones who provide the impetus for trends and topics, said Raue, adding that they are ones responsible for driving ahead with innovative technology. One-third of the revenue generated by the Information Technology industry comes from private customers, said August-Wilhelm Scheer, Germany's top lobbyist for the digital economy.
No figures were available for how many visitors came to this year's event, which adopted "Connected Worlds" as its 2010 slogan. Last year, the number was down 20 percent to 400,000. One in every five CeBIT visitors was from outside Germany. A slight decrease in attendance from America was offset by larger numbers from Asia in 2010. European attendance was on a par with last year's high attendance rates.
The next CeBIT will be staged from 1 to 5 March in Hannover
