On the first Sunday in April Turkmenistan celebrates the national holiday «Suw damjasy altyn danesi» (A drop of water is a grain of gold).
This date is special in the national calendar. It is the embodiment of genuine traditions of the Turkmen people, who over the period of their history have treated water as if it were a precious gift, which means life itself. During the period of great Renaissance this good holiday acquired a new quality and meaning of a bright symbol of unanimity and solidarity of Turkmen society, its devotion to the chosen way of peace, constructive endeavor and progress.
The organized International Forum “A drop of water is a grain of gold”, devoted to problems of water industry management along with the demonstration of engineering, equipment, technology, materials and services for construction, maintenance and servicing of water industry objects gives an opportunity to demonstrate new energy and resources saving equipment and technologies, instruments, materials and reagents, large-scale services in the field of construction and exploitation of water structure objects, agricultural, industrial and housing, large-scale investment projects in the sector of rational water consumption, ecology and water resources security of Turkmenistan and the region.

Turkmenistan today shows a well-considered complex approach to decisions of the problems of rational water consumption, thoughtful attitude to water resources and supplying the people with pure drinking water. The legislative basis of state policy in this important sphere is “The Water” code.
Development of water industry is one of the priorities the state policy. Year after year the capacity of water industry sector has been growing.
Today water industry of the country has 15 water reserves with total aggregate capacity of 3,017 billion cubic meters. After carrying out a number of works the capacity of reservoirs will reach:
In order to enlarge the flow capacity of the Kara-Kum river work on its bed widening, deepening and purification is being carried out.
In Ashgabat and all provinces drinking water purifying plants with advanced equipment have been built. Construction of water treatment facilities and water desalinating plants is considered to be the priority object of the social infrastructure.
Nowadays the total length of the irrigation systems in the country makes 42,5 thousand kilometers, the length of the collector system is over 35 thousand km. The Ministry is planning to clean pumps within 18 km of the irrigation network, including 3700 km including 3700 km of the country and 14300 farm-irrigation systems. The carried out work allows complete provide agriculture with irrigation water in the demanded quantity.
To keep mineral subterranean water on the optimal level, avoid salinification and improve reclamation state of the irrigated area with the help of old and newly acquired equipment, purification of the collector net of 14 thousand kilometers long is planned, including 3359 km of the country and 9550 km of the farm collector net.
On July 15 2009 in the history of independent neutral Turkmenistan an event which c an be included in the chronicles of the epoch of new Renaissance as one of its brightest pages took place. Right in the heart of the Kara-Kum Desert an official ceremony of installation of the first stage of Lake “Altyn asyr” took place. It is a unique man-made sea, or in fact, the most sophisticated hydro-engineering system.
Every year Turkmen Lake, the basin of which is the natural cavity Karashor situated on the border of three provinces: Balkan, Dashoguzskiy, and Ahalskiy, will receive up to 10 billion cubic meters of collector and drainage mineralized water. It will allow to crucially improve reclamation state of the irrigated soil in all regions, solve many problems of soil salinification, swamping and draught. The capacity of the largest man-made reservoir, 103 km long, 18,6 km wide, 69 m in average deep, will make 132 billion cubic meters, with the water level area of about two thousand square meters. The total length of collecting main and headrace collectors for drain water will make 2654 km.
The idea of making Turkmen Lake in independent Turkmenistan came into life for a short period of time, for nine years in all. The construction of Turkmen lake is divided into three stages. At the first stage of Turkmen Lake construction 374 million of denominated manats were drawn. This is only one seventh part of the planned sum planned to realize all three stages of the project. In all 2 billion 665 million 550 thousand mantas are to be drawn (It make almost 1 billion US dollars!)
As a result of implementation of the stable, calculating and rational irrigation plan the irrigated area for the years of Independence in the region of one of the largest man-made rivers in the world, Kara-Kum-Derya, has overgrown one million hectares. One of the high achievements in the water industry sector for the years of Independence is construction of one more man-made river, Turkmen-Derya, in Dashoguzskiy province. The river is 220 km long.
One of the trends of activity of Ministry of water industry of Turkmenistan is to study, introduce and produce water-saving technologies of irrigation. For that in Ruhabatskiy etrap of Ahalskiy province a plant for production of equipment for tickle-irrigation. And in the system of Ministry of water industry of Turkmenistan a special department of construction and exploitation “Damja” was made.
Making a modern production infrastructure of fish breeding industry is the implementation of the plan to provide the domestic consumers market with food profusion. According to the program of the sector diversification for the period up to 2012 seven new plants in the Caspian coastal area are to be built: an artificial fish breeding and fish products complex , two aquaculture enterprises and others.
