IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS to be held annually in future
07.04.2010
“No country in the world has ever seen such a great, and above all rapid, increase in the amount of waste it produces as China is currently experiencing,” says Bárbara De Mena of Technologie Transfer Zentrum (ttz), based in Bremerhaven, Germany. The quantity of household waste is rising at around eight percent per year in Beijing alone. “Despite China’s sterling efforts to improve its waste management, there is still a great need in the People’s Republic to optimise collection, recycling and environmentally compatible disposal of waste of all kinds,” emphasises De Mena.
So is China an Eldorado for foreign technology companies? “Getting into the Chinese market is certainly not easy,” says Erik Hagen, Export Sales Manager and expert on China at Weima Maschinenbau GmbH, from experience. The company, based in Ilsfeld, Germany, specialises in shredding machines. “For example, when waste is being turned into refuse derived fuel (RDF) the problems often start with the mixture. Before the refuse even arrives at an RFD waste incineration plant, dedicated collectors of recyclable material have already removed many materials, such as PET bottles and foils. What is left is considerably soggier and lower in calorific value than in Europe.” There is comparatively little potential left for ultramodern treatment and recycling technologies. That is why the engineering company Weima sees its main opportunities in China as being in industrial waste, as the “shredding” stage plays an essential part in processing this waste into material to be ground and reclaimed material.
According to Rolf Dietmar from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ - German Society for Technical Cooperation) another obstacle for foreign companies is the cost of procuring information and licences in China. The expert, based in Beijing, thinks that the best opportunities for breaking into the market currently lie in straightforward projects in smaller cities with an environmentally open-minded municipal authority, and in niche markets.
“In many sectors foreign technology suppliers are competing with Chinese companies. Their products are much cheaper, but at the expense of quality,” says Dietmar from GTZ, putting his finger on another well-known problem in the Chinese environmental market. “Although many municipal authorities have now realised that these cheap products break quickly, especially in the country’s colder regions. This means that we are doing increasingly well with our high-quality refuse bins and our five-year guarantee.”
The environmental trade fair IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS 2010, which is taking place from 5 to 7 May in Shanghai, offers an ideal opportunity to present products to the Chinese environmental technology market, to get to know prospective buyers and competitors, and to make local contacts.

IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS to be held annually in future
With effect from 2011, IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS will be held annually in spring at the beginning of May at SNIEC. By staging the trade fair on an annual basis in future, Messe München is taking account of the successful cooperation with Shanghai ZM International Exhibition Co., Ltd, and of the high acceptance of IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS. “The cooperation with ZM has been very well-received on the national and international market. The shortening to an annual cycle is an important step towards adapting the event even more intensively to the increasing dynamism of the Chinese environmental market in the interest of exhibitors and their customers“ said Eugen Egetenmeir, Managing Director Messe München GmbH.
According to Mr. Jiang Gang, General Manager of Shanghai ZM International Exhibition Co., Ltd., “the switch to an annual cycle, which the industry is already accustomed to through EPTEE + CWS, sends an important signal to decision-makers from politics and industry that the joint event IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS is the most important trade fair for the environmental technology industry in China”.
The first joint IFAT CHINA + EPTEE + CWS of the two cooperation partners - Messe München International and ZM – will open its doors in four weeks’ time from May 5 to 7, 2010 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC).
